One of the things I love the most about what I do is being able to guide my clients through their experience in a way that produces the most genuine version of who they are as individuals, and how they come together as a couple or family. Creating coordinated and cohesive outfits for a family photography session can be a wonderful way to assist in cultivating beautiful memories to unfold. Have you ever wondered how to choose the perfect wardrobe that fosters comfort and ease in your photographs, in turn elevating the visual narrative in your final gallery? Join me as I share the guide my clients use to achieve this harmony.
Choose a color palette: Start by selecting a color palette that includes 2-3 main colors and neutrals. Earthy tones like soft blues, greens, warm browns, and blush pinks often work well for a cohesive look that doesn’t distract from who you are.
Avoid matching perfectly: Instead of everyone wearing the exact same outfit, aim for coordinated but not identical looks. Mix and match colors within your chosen palette.
Patterns and Textures: Incorporate patterns and textures to add visual interest. Consider subtle vertical stripes, florals or varying knits for depth and texture.
Keep comfort in mind: Ensure everyone feels comfortable in their chosen outfits, especially kids. Uncomfortable clothing can lead to fidgeting and not feeling your best in your photos.
Balance accessories: Don’t overdo accessories, (avoid smart watches) but do include a few to tie the looks together. Coordinate your shoes or go barefoot, belts, layers like cardigans, or hats can work well.
Coordinate with the setting: Consider the backdrop of your photography location. If it’s outdoors, think about how your color palette and style will complement the natural surroundings.
Timeless vs. Trendy: Aim for a timeless look that won’t feel outdated in a few years. Avoid overly trendy pieces.
Test outfits in advance: Have a dress rehearsal or lay out the outfits all together before the actual session to make sure they will work well together and that everyone is comfortable.
Remember, the key is to coordinate, not necessarily match. Each family member should express their individual style while staying within the chosen color palette and theme, resulting in a harmonious ensemble to best represent the season of life we are documenting.
